Ideas for Bright Idea 2007 Keynote Speakers and/or Themes

Joe Lambert, founder of the Center for Digital Storytelling (All education begins in, as Maxine Greene would say, the "lived lives" of those involved. The conference would focus on telling the story of education in all its various settings. Could be paired with full-day workshops on digital storytelling on Friday [we are doing one-week training sessions this summer and should have a couple dozen teachers prepared to lead workshops]. Pearson Foundation might provide some financial support. Could tie in with MSU's ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY--The Glass Castle--and other memoirs)

Jim Burke (suggested by Troy Hicks), a strong favorite of high school teachers)--his book titles suggest themes--not sure how well this would play to those not teaching at elementary school level, but his publisher is currently working with us on another project and would likely help us out on this one, too.

These all seem worthy potential avenues. Leah, thanks for the Anderson reference, I ordered a copy for myself today!

Let's try to surface as many names as possible now--we can narrow later. What about Geneva Smitherman? Sara Robbins on Writing the Community? Anne Haas Dyson (leaving MSU, but maybe we could still get her)?

This is along the same lines as digital storytelling, but what about focusing on new media reading and writing? This leaves room for larger curricular issues as well as specific 'take-with-you' lessons. Someone like Cynthia Selfe or Gail Hawisher might be a good keynote speaker. I'm sure there are lots of others, but I remember reading some great pieces by them while working on my masters. Such a topic would also be open enough for a variety of sessions (digital storytelling, blogging, multi-authoring, etc.).

On the Jim Burke front, I think he does share some great ideas, along with lots of mediocre ones, but he is very popular. I imagine attendance would be pretty high. I went to one of his sessions at NCTE in San Fran, and the room was past standing room only. I'm not sure how high of a concern attendance is, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

All of the names and ideas sound great--I'd go to any of these conferences.
